Discussion

An update on activities in Forming the Serbian IAF network

Suzana Zivkovic from Reka Mleka gave an introduction.

The idea to form a Serbian IAF network was born in October 2006, after the IAF conference in Stockholm

Jim Campbell and Jon Jenkins from the IAF recommended that Rosemary Cairns, who is working in Serbia and is a certificated facilitator, joins the formation process.

Since October, Suzana, Tamara, Rosemary and other facilitators, that had been a part of this initiative, have been meeting to discuss creating a facilitators’ network in Serbia. As a result of this Wiki PB was started and the questionnaire for assessing interest was created. The questionnaire was sent to a number of addresses, mostly through private networks. The responses had been collected and processed.

The responses to the questionnaires

Tamara Zivadinovic from Reka Mleka first invited everyone to introduce themselves.

She gave an overview of what Reka Mleka has in its library about facilitation, as well as some handbooks that had been translated by the project. She also gave an introduction what the agenda of the day should look like.

She briefly presented the summarized responses to the questionnaires. It is agreed to post these results at Wiki PB.

General Discussion

During the meeting different items were discussed:

  1. The meaning of the word facilitation in Serbian – can it be translated or should it remain the same. The general consent is that this is a word (“fasilitator”) that is becoming widely used and should therefore be accepted in the Serbian language.
  2. Membership fees for IAF – membership fee is 50$ per year, and anybody who pays the fee can become a member of the IAF. Only obstacle is that fee can be paid only through internet. Rosemary said that she is going to check other possibilities for paying the IAF fee.
  3. Rosemary presented the benefits of being a member of the IAF: networking, participation at conferences, exchanging knowledge, newsletters, scholarships, certification processes, etc.
  4. To become a member of IAF there are no specific requirements, for certification there are
  5. The Serbian network can either have formal (legal) or informal status. The group has agreed that it is good to start as an informal network, and than later to establish professional association, or some other organization.
  6. Work as a network, or an association? – First to start as a network. Rosemary added that IAF is currently working as a cooperative
  7. The list of network members’ specialties and training needs should be compiled in order to plan activities and to assess what potentials we have within the network.
  8. What problems are existing in working in networks and how we can overcome them – Milos talked about the bad experience he has had in working with networks and added that the ways of overcoming them are: that we have to have an agreement on how we are going to work and a joint goal

Discussion about goals of network

We brainstormed some goals of our network:

  • to list the resources
  • to allow professional development
  • to have rotating system of management
  • to ensure information flow
  • to include all possible interested members
  • to position the group/network on the market
  • to set quality standards in facilitation
  • to get feedback information (evaluation) on members who are facilitating workshops or trainings
  • to involve members in internal training (and external), or other activities according their specialties
  • to set up WIKI – http://iafserbia.pbwiki.com as an information desk
  • WIKI should be open for reading to the broader audience, but only “invited” people to be able to post comments and information
  • to create a questionnaire to assess specialities of interested facilitators (potential members) – general and specific ones; as well as list people’s fields of interest
  • members can express their interest in which areas are they willing to make a presentation/training or share knowledge with others. First such a occasion is going to be at September meeting (8th of September)
  • to create theme groups at a later stage
  • to create a list of books and documents we can share with others
  • to create a data base on knowledge and techniques that are used in Serbia, for example – CRDA, Reka Mleka and others.
